Southland Agriculture students bake for Christmas in Food Science class
Food ScienceThis fall Southland Agriculture students have the opportunity to take a new food science course.  Instructor Kevin Brown says this course is designed to introduce students to the aspects of food chemistry while also performing hands on labs in the kitchen. Students will receive credit towards their graduation requirement for chemistry while also learning about food preparation and safety. In the food science class students have also learned about sugars, fats, carbohydrates and how leavening agents affect baking. Along the way they have had to balance chemical equations, determine the number of moles in solutions and even know how to use a periodic table.
