Southland Ag Students learn about precision Agriculture


Chris Horob presenting 2018Southland Intro to Agriculture students learned about precision agriculture this past Sept 11th at the Ron Gilgenbach pioneer dealership. Pictured is Chris Horob an account manager for pioneer showing the students the many facets of precision agriculture in farming today. Students learned about variable rate technology and how it is used to apply fertilizer using soil grid sampling , they also learned about the history of GPS global positioning systems along with the progress it has made over the past 20 years.

Students learned the basics of auto steer, auto row shut offs and the operation of weather stations on farms that can be used to make fertilizer and water decisions during the growing season.  Students also were able the watch a drone UAV that is used for crop scouting, weed detection and other field problems. This field trip fit right into the units covered in class and opened the eyes of the students to possible career choices in the future.
